They are supports in a classroom so that all learners can be successful. They can be used in many different contexts and all subjects. They are vital to have in a classroom where there are second language learners. They help to give the learners confidence in their writing or speaking.
Another great thing about sentence stems is that they are a form of accountability for the learners. IF they are posted in your room as guides for conversation, writing, or key vocabulary then learners will feel more success throughout the day. You, as the facilitator of learning, must also continually MODEL the use of the sentence stems throughout the day.

You could also have sentence stems up for accountable talk during Daily 5, Science stations and discussions, Daily 5 Math. The sky is the limit.
REMEMBER: THE GOAL:
Providing support for all learners to be successful in communication their learning!
How do you use sentence stems? Do you have any examples to share?
